The 5th Anniversary of The Broad Museum is Celebrated with an Architecture Film

After only five years, The Broad Museum is already becoming an iconic, recognizable Los Angeles structure. And we love how they are celebrating their fifth year as a renowned museum. In honor of the anniversary, Brazilian-born, LA-based visual artist Clarissa Tossin created an eleven-minute film on the beauty of The Broad’s architecture.
The film Light and Space was shot in 4K and takes the viewer through a slow motion, architectural journey of The Broad, focusing on the unique use of light throughout the built structure. One also gets subtle views of some of the contemporary art (1950s to present) housed in the 120,000-sq-ft museum.
Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, The Broad’s “veil-and-vault” concept was created to showcase the two floors of gallery exhibitions as well as the storage space of The Broad Art Foundation’s world-wide lending library. The storage space or the “vault” contains art not on display or on loan, yet visitors are able to peer through windows to view and get a sense of how immense the collection is.
The vault is enveloped on each side by the “veil,” which is a constructed feature that resembles white honeycomb. The veil components run along the galleries and filter natural light, creating an airy environment. Textured yet fluid, the veil is used as an architectural element to capture and reflect light in the space and on the artwork. The same thoughtful approach is taken with the architecture of the museum’s exterior.
When not closed due to COVID-19, The Broad has free admission to the public so put this museum on your list to visit once the pandemic is over. The founders Eli and Edythe Broad are devoted to making arts and culture accessible for all. The Broad also created a Diversity Apprenticeship Program to cement their commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity. The program provides opportunities for those pursuing careers in art.
But until then, watch Light and Space by Clarissa Tossin. The film is a wonderful homage to The Broad and well worth taking the time to see. To view, click here.
