AIALA Student Exhibition in Architecture and Design Goes Virtual

by Abeer Sweis
October 29, 2020
I’ve been teaching in architecture and design programs at universities for many years, and it is something I love doing. I especially enjoy guiding students to further their creativity and think beyond the norm. I love how each one of them can come up with a unique solution for the same building. Seeing students excel and get excited about architectural design gives me a bit of a glimpse into the future of architecture, design and construction. It’s inspiring.

During this pandemic I am glad to see that student works have virtual outlets to showcase their projects. One such online event (free) is the AIALA student exhibition and awards ceremony that will take place on November 5th at 6 p.m. Please take the time to see this exhibition and the outstanding students who were chosen from 16 California universities.

From the AIALA invitation:

The 2×8 Committee Presents: 2×8: Domum Exhibition Opening + Awards Ceremony Wander through a digital matrix of virtual exhibition galleries at 2×8: Domum, the first year that the AIALA’s 2×8 Student Exhibition and Competition goes completely virtual.

As designed by Garet Ammerman, THR.D studio, Inc, and developed by Bryan Zheng, WbML at USC, the virtual exhibition space offers an untethered immersive gallery experience within a field of equally accessible student pods distributed by a graphic scaffolding.

The 2×8 annual exhibition showcases exemplary student work from 16 Architecture and Design Universities throughout California to celebrate the diversity of architectural philosophy and encourage conversation around a central theme. This year’s theme reflects on the dialogue surrounding housing in Los Angeles and other urban centers across the country. Students were encouraged to submit presentation materials and 3d models that respond to the theme with innovative solutions.

Winners of the competition are award scholarships which will be awarded at the opening November 5.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.
