Doughnuts and Architecture?!

Doughnut aficionados near and far will tell you that Sidecar Doughnuts + Coffee is hands down the sweetest establishment in Southern California for ridiculously-mouth-watering doughnuts, avid community giving, and that’s right…award-winning architecture.

You have to love a business that is on point with service, product, social values, and architectural aesthetic. Last year, AIA Los Angeles awarded Sidecar’s Del Mar location with an honor award and a People’s Choice award in Best Restaurant Design. The firm Fleetwood Fernandez Architects created an inviting space of warm oak paneling, hand-poured white terrazzo infused with mother of pearl, and playful geometric features that run along the walls and ceiling.

Sidecar clearly takes a thoughtful approach to the visual appeal of each of their locations. For instance, Santa Monica’s café has custom Heath Ceramics tile flooring and Art Deco design elements inspired by the building in which it is situated. The flagship location in Costa Mesa has old city charm with antique fixtures, vintage wallpaper, and hand-painted tile. And their shop in Torrance has an interesting industrial look.

We can’t help but drool over the architecture and of course the doughnuts—seriously, the huckleberry doughnut is the definition of delicious and a SweisKloss staff favorite. But we must applaud Sidecar for their community awareness. Their core values are rooted in quality and the connection of people through something as simple and joy inducing as having coffee and doughnuts together.

Sidecar says that the local community is at the heart and soul of everything they do, which is why they developed a philanthropic program called SideCares. They donate leftover doughnuts to local food banks and shelters and consistently collaborate with non-profits. Their latest initiative is Doughnuts for Heroes. When a customer buys a Hero a Doughnut, the Sidecar shop team delivers the confections, along with carafes of hot coffee, to heroes in the local communities, from healthcare workers to firefighters to teachers and more.

We don’t need an excuse to go to Sidecar…the doughnuts are reason enough but knowing that we can support their Heroes initiative, well, it looks like there will be a lot more doughnut trips in our future. For more info about Sidecar Doughnuts + Coffee, click here
