Today is the official start of summer!! So, now is the perfect time to transform your backyard into an oasis you can enjoy throughout the season (and beyond). These features will not only elevate your space, but also allow you to enjoy the outdoors in comfort and style all year long.
Pergolas, Wind Screens & Sun Shades
Block out those Santa Ana winds and direct sunlight by installing shades. Retractable screens come in a variety of colors and finishes while the mesh can provide insect protection, allow natural ventilation and privacy. We incorporated this motorized sunscreen at this Santa Monica home (installed by Screens of Southern California), allowing the homeowner to spend more time relaxing in her spacious outdoor living area in comfort. Pergolas also offer a respite from the sun and screen shades can be attached to them as well to increase protection.
Outdoor Kitchens
Having the ability to prepare and to cook food without leaving the party is the primary objective of an outdoor kitchen. A built-in grill, counterspace, a sink and a beverage cooler are all necessary ingredients! The outdoor kitchen and dining area we designed at this Carthay Square Spanish home make entertaining a breeze.
Fireplaces & Firepits
Create ambience, warmth and coziness with fireplaces, firepits or fire tables, that use natural gas, propane or wood. The Dekko Avera firepit we installed at a Sherman Oaks property is lightweight, available in a choice of stones and can be used on a variety of surfaces including wood and composite decking. At this Miracle Mile ADU (right image), Earthcore’s Isokern fireplace with weathered oak log set (installed by CAPO) is the focal point of the outdoor living space. Earthcore’s product range utilizes recycled and natural materials. If you have a firepit, don’t forget to cover it during the winter months to protect the burner from debris.

Heating Lamps
Whether freestanding, wall or ceiling mounted, take the chill out of the evening air with heating lamps. Infratech’s infrared patio heaters are eco-friendly (no harmful gasses or emissions), energy efficient, and, with their sleek design, blend into your décor. For those willing to splurge, Arhaus’ Heatsail Outdoor Freestanding Dome Lamp is sleek and stylish.
Lighting
Keep the party going all night with fashionable and functional outdoor lighting. In this Mar Vista remodel (left image), we incorporated wall sconces and a pendant light fixture to create a warm glow that allows the moonlight to be center stage. This Flindt Outdoor Wall Sconce “emits an asymmetrical downward light that illuminates the ground” combining safety with reducing environmental impact. Windfall’s modern and streamlined outdoor wall sconces provides “robust durability in harsh elements” and can be mounted vertically or horizontally.
Furniture
Whether you are dining alfresco with friends or simply gazing at the stars, create a chic and comfortable outdoor space with couches, dining tables and lounge chairs. Consider modular seating that can serve multiple purposes. Make sure all fabrics are weather-resistant to prevent color fading and or mildew, and choose easy to care for materials, such as teak and metal, that can stand up to mother nature. Gloster offers a wide range of dining and side tables to suite any decor constructed from their signature teak as well as a range of materials from aluminum to ceramic.
Accessories
“Ground patio furniture by placing it on an all-weather rug “, suggests Better Homes & Gardens. An outdoor rug can provide underfoot comfort and a splash of color. Along with comfort, add texture, pattern and color with throw pillows, cushions and blankets. Remember, removable furniture covers can be easily washed. Add some fun with lawn games such as cornhole or giant Jenga. Treat yourself to a hammock. Splurge on an outdoor shower to keep the outside where it belongs. Then, invite friends, or grab a good book and a glass of wine, and enjoy the summer!!
