5 Inspiring Outdoor Water Features

There are quite a few advantages to having an outdoor water feature. No matter how big or small, water features add a lovely aesthetic appeal as well as creating a serene atmosphere through sight, sound, and even scent. It’s a proven fact that connecting with nature has therapeutic effects on your senses and wellbeing, so it is something to consider when planning an outdoor space.

In addition to promoting a diverse ecosystem, well-designed water systems can harvest rainwater and recirculate it with the proper filtration. Incorporating aquatic plants is beneficial as well because they are oxygenators. Oxygenating plants that are completely submerged absorb carbon dioxide from the water and releases oxygen, filtering pollutants.

Here, we pulled together five water features that will provide some great design inspiration for your outdoor area.

Linear Sprout: A modern approach to a water fountain, linear spouts vary in cascade length. We love the clean, elegant design and how well it blends in with its surroundings.

Water Containers: These containers are great when you want something more simple and low maintenance. They are perfect as stand-alone pieces for smaller spaces or can be combined with other containers. Ones with bubblers will provide more water sound and movement.

Water Walls: Typically, water walls are more contemporary in design. They create a nicely defined focal point in a space, and the trickling water adds a relaxing sound. Walls vary in size, so if you don’t want to commit to a larger scaled wall, you could opt for a shorter, narrower one. We installed a water wall at our West Hollywood Hills Contemporary project, and we loved the final look.

Waterfall and Cascade: Flowing waterfalls and cascades ties in with nature the most as far as an organic appearance. When you want more of a natural water garden, this is a nice option.
Ponds: While one might think of more traditional shapes when visualizing ponds, we have pulled images that have a more modern aesthetic. These ponds are angular in design, yet they have a serene stillness that looks beautiful and works for contemporary homes.
