Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to be kinder to yourself? To do better to nurture your body and mind? January is a great time to focus on wellness, so we thought we’d do our part and share some ideas on achieving wellness through design.

Whether you are constructing a new home or interested in making smaller changes to existing rooms and décor, natural materials, fabrics and finishes can support a healthier lifestyle. As more people are conscious of the health impacts of synthetic materials, the use of natural and sustainable materials in construction are getting more attention. Choosing non-toxic and chemical-free building materials and interior finishes can help reduce carbon dioxide production and minimize other negative environmental and health impacts.

On the cutting edge of green building materials, Partanna has developed an alternative to traditional cement, which “uses recycled materials … and removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere,” during production, according to their website. Prometheus Materials is another company that has developed a "zero-carbon alternative" to concrete blocks that are “algae based,” according to their website, and was named one of Dezeen’s Top 10 Innovative Materials of 2023.

Homes built using the timeless method of rammed earth (where natural raw materials such as earth, chalk, sand, gravel, etc. are compacted to form the structure), are low maintenance, energy efficient and durable. Applying natural lime plaster on walls is another eco-friendly and healthy option as it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, prevents dampness, and acts as a natural dehumidifier.

Incorporating natural stone and slabs such as soapstone and quartzite for countertops look good and are eco-friendly. Flooring is another area where natural materials can be both beneficial and aesthetically appealing. Select reclaimed wood or cork flooring with organic wax or oil sealers. If you are looking to make simpler changes to your home, consider blending natural textiles such as organic cotton, linen, and bamboo in your accessories.
